Tranny oil pan

I went with Summits deep finned aluminum, holds 2 or 3 more quarts.

There are pros and cons to both but i would choose a steel pan any day over aluminum. A steel pan will dent if hit good but an aluminum pan will crack. The aluminum pan will help strengthen the case a bit but not the steel pan.

As for pan depth, depends on what trans you're running. If it's a 350 or 400 either pan is good but a 700R4 i would go with the deep pan since heat kills these trans and the more fluid it can hold the cooler it will run.

yeah, what are the advantages to deep and normal pans, gotta worry about bottoming out with a deep pan or ground clearence? i may eventually wanna get a pan for my 400 with a drain plug so..

I posted why the deep pan but guess this should answer it.

man i guess im just off tongiht, i should go to bed. But why wouldnt you just run deep pans all the time? i mean how much further down do they drop, do you really need to worry about bottoming out? or hitting it? thanks

A bigger pan means more fluid. More fluid means cooler, cleaner fluid which will prolong the life of the trans.

As for material, aluminum transfers heat quicker than steel. IMO, aluminum is the better material for a trans pan because it will help keep the trans cooler.

As for denting the pan, you've got some major problems if you're hitting the trans pan on something anyway. If you think that you'll hit the trans pan on a rock or something then you really need a skid plate; neither the steel or aluminum pan will hold up.
