Hey Everyone,

I drove my K5 last night for the first time in a little while.
The truck would shift just fine until it came time to shift into 3rd (D), I pulled over and manually shifted the truck and it worked fine for what I could tell, I could only test 1 and 2 since I was in a parking lot.
When I got back on the road, even when shifting manually, when I hit 3rd (D) the engine would not transfer power, it would just rev up like it was in neutral.
I limped it home, driving slowly and being careful to keep the rpms down, but I haven't had a chance to check anything out.

I adjusted my TV cable not long ago, following the guide from an internet site. I drove the truck one time and it felt like it was downshifting and then upshifting again right afterwards, but it never did it again.
I recently swapped motors but I did make sure my converter was seated properly.
Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Vacuum secondaries? Linkage? Or is my tranny shot to hell?
All other gears work just fine.

Thanks

I have the exact problem, If it's a 700r4. Look at your transmission fluid if its brown and smells bad then I'm pretty sure that means you need a rebuild.

Did you check the fluid? Any glittering in the fluid. Is it red, pink, tan, brown or black. what does it smell like? I think it still might be the TV valve or adjustment of it. Adjust the cable by opening the cable clip at the carb....open throttle wide open and press the clip in to retain the position of the cable at that time. Does the cable work freely while disconnected from the carb? It should feel some resistance from the lever the cable is hooked to inside the trans. It is a TV valve to the valve body, and it controls shift points as well as line pressure. keep posting up.

tranny

i had the same problem with my turbo 350 it was my tranny i pulled the pan off and there was medal and clutch in the pan .i changed it and now i am good to go.

was that metal aluminum or steel. If its steel its only a matter of time.

That wasn't my reply. I haven't had a chance to check the fluid yet, I've been out of town.
I'll check it later today when the sun is up some more and let ya know.

Finally had a chance to check my junk.

Tranny fluid was low, slightly discolored and some burnt smell but still had the presence of tranny fluid.
I'm thinking the next step may be to pull the pan and see what I see.

Anyone rebuilt a 700r4? Can I do it myself and where can I get a kit?

You can do it yourself, IF you have the patience to do so, and you have a GM service manual, the Chilton and Haynes are crap. This is no backyard job to do. It takes precision, and cleanliness. You will have to take it to a very good tranny shop to have a few things checked which require special tools (see GM service manual). Also to check the torque convertor. It will also require flushing the transmission coolant lines and trans cooler.

I recommend http://www.coanracing.com/

Ask for Walker

Awww, not quite what I wanted to hear. I'm not sure if I have the tools to do something like that.
Any ideas on where to get a kit, or what I should be looking for in a kit?

I have used Coan for a couple transmissions.....Walker (Craig) will talk you through what would be best for your application. Their rebuild kits consist of Transtar gaskets and seal kit, Alto clutches and steels, and I have used their own valve bodies for manual shifts. Very satisfied, and cheaper than stuff in Jegs, or Summit.
Contact them through their tech line on line, See link in previous post.

Thanks for the help and the great replies.
Would I be able to swap in a T350 or a T400 without having to switch transfercases or any other large task?
There seems to be more 350 and 400 tranny's than 700r4's for cheap in my area.

Not sure on the TH350, but on the TH400 you will need the correct adapter and the t-case will either need to be swapped or have the input replaced with the correct 32 spline one.

I'm assuming since you have a 700r4 you probably have a 208 or 241.. find a th400 out of the same year range 3/4 ton as your truck(81 to 88 for the 208, 89 to 91 Suburbans for the 241). The only issue might be if the th400 is longer, otherwise the driveshafts will be the same.
