I need to protect my tranny pan. has anybody ever welded some plate to the bottom of a stock pan? that way you cant dent it or put a hole in it. What would be the problem?

does anyone make custom thick strong pans?

Thanks, Ryan

If you are afraid of hitting the transmission pan you should build a real skid plate for it.

Putting the weight of the truck on the transmission pan will break something (trans housing, adapter, etc.) even if you can keep the pan from denting.

do you have a auto? I see you have a k5 what would you do. there is room to weld to the t-case crossmember but in front of the tranny is a cluster. no room to brace the front of the skid plate. any thoghts? or just dont worry about it??

Mine's a 4 speed and its been a while since I've been under an auto K5 but I promise you don't want any of your truck's weight on it.

For starters: Does the trans pan hang below the frame? If no, how far is it above the frame rail?

the pan is about 1/2in above the bottom of the frame. and I have 4in lift and 42s.

Here's how I would make a skid plate for that:

Hopefully my drawing isn't too confusing.

Thank you for taking the time to draw that that. It looks perfect, and I would love to do it but the driveline come right though the pass side of all of it. and it needs to travel up and down so it uses all the room on the pass side where all of the skid would mount. it sucks for me! its even more frusterating because I had the same 4 speed as you with no problems but when i decided to do new motor and a doubler everyone is like get an auto do it do it. now i have issues. :o

One other thing to mention is that there are (at least) two different depth 700R4 pans, if that's what you are running.

I agree on the skidplate, the pan needs to be protected, but if a shallower pan would help, I'd consider it. With an auxillary trans cooler of course!
