/forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif Was woundering which tranny I should go with for a daily drive/rock crawler. I am putting in a NP205 and later a doubler from ORD. I am thinking about a TH700R4 because of the overdrive for the highway driving to and from work. Or a TH400 for the strength of it. I already have a TH350 and a NP203.
Thanks for your time.

That's kinda a toss up right there. It all depends on what exactly your gonna do in this truck. If your gonna but some big tires on it and do some hard wheelin I would go with the 400. If it is gonna be mainly a daily driver and see some mild off road driving, then you can get 700r4's built pretty strong. From the sound of it I think you would benefit more from the 400. I've yet to hear of a 700r4 that could match a 400 in strength. There are other options like getting a 4L80e or a gearvendor overdrive, but both of these options are rather pricy. Good luck on your project.

Not trying to steel your post SF87K5

But what is involved in going to a 4L80E? What do they come in and dosent E mean Electricly controled? Im just wondering how it would all be done espically on a carb motor and about what price were lookin at

we have 4L80e'a in the hummers for the military. How stronge are they compared to a TH700r4? Thanks for your help.

The 4l80 is the best of both. It has the overdrive, but with the strength of a th400. If I could afford to buy one Id run a 4l80 in mine.

Yeah, the 4l80e is an electronic, overdrive version of the 400. They were used in chevy 1-ton and some 3/4 ton trucks starting in '91 I think. Jet makes a kit so you can run one in a non-computerized truck, but this kit alone costs about $1,400. I want one, maybe one day I'll be able to afford one.

Well, SF87K5, comparing a 4l80e to a 700r4 is like comparing a 400 to a 700r4 in terms of strength. By the way, what MOS do you have? It's nice to see some fellow military guys in here.

$1400 isent bad if you have priced a 700R4 from them espically if its bassically a th400 with overdrive

No, $1,400 is just for the kit to run a 4L80e, then you have to buy the transmission, which a new one runs around $2,500 from what ive seen. And then you need an adaptor or a transfer case that fits the transmission. so in the end you spend upwards of $4,000. Ofcourse you can buy a used transmission for a lot less than $2,500.

Well for that price I will either get a TH400 or a TH700R4, I can get a NP205 for $250 and I need to look around for a TH400. I already have the TH350 and the NP203 in my '79 K5. The tranny I am asking about is for my '87 K5 I am building. I was priced around $500 for a TH700R4, Both tranny and transfer case was guaranted to run. I know I will need to re-build them both but that is ok with me.
I heard you can buy an after market overdrive for the TH350 and TH400. Do you know anything about them and if so how are they?

Thank for your guys help.

P.S. Nevercomplete
I am in the infantry (11B) but I am going to Special Forces school in N.C. right now. If you want to talk go ahead and send me a P.M. Talk to you later

WOW thats not cheap your right wonder if theres a way to combine a th400 and 4l60E

There are two aftermarket overdrives i know about. One fits between the transfercase and transmission. The other is a gear vendor overdrive. It attaches to the rear output of the transfer case. I've heard these are good units, but they also cost about $2,500. Here is the website http://www.gearvendors.com
Hope this helps.

So basically try to find a TH700R4 if I want the over drive then. I am just woundering on how gas and daily driving will be with the TH400 matted to a GM 400 block and a NP205?
Thanks for the help again.
