Just did a full rebuild on my 700 tranny (Yes, I know, I must be a masochist) after the torque converter sent metal throughout the tranny and tore up the pump. Almost to my surprise, the truck goes right into gear and drives again. As it turns out, whoever did the engine swap put a non-ECM 350 in place of a computerized 305. Either they didn't bother to make provisions for torque converter lock-up or something just didn't work. I never had lock up and that is probably why the converter puked. I was able to apply power to the lock-up line on the tranny while driving and it locked right up, so I know that the problem is electrical and outside the transmission (thank God). I am confident that I can fix this problem, but my real trouble is elsewhere.
I have no 4th gear now. The 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are almost normal and the kickdown works fine, plus reverse works fine, so I know that all of the clutches and the 2-4 band are working OK. Therefore, I assume that the lack of overdrive problem is elsewhere. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this matter? If I'm gonna run a 700, I might as well save some gas money. Any help is appreciated.
