Probably a stupid question, but if I got a transmission fluid cooler for my 700r4, to use it, I'd just have to mount it in front of the radiator, and take the stock lines that go to the radiator, and extend them to the new trans cooler, correct?

Want to get an expanded capacity trans pan and fluid cooler for the truck, but I've never had to install a trans cooler before so I'm not 100% sure.

im pretty sure that is how it is done..it does go in front of the radiator though like you said.. i plan on doing one as well on my 700r4 and installing a thermometer

generally its suggested to keep the stock in radiator cooler and run the aux cooler after that. Its supposed to warm up the fluid in the winter using warm coolant...but i dont let the truck warm up in the winter before i drive it, esp since all it needs is 30-45 secs of "warming up" before its ready to go.

So I'd just have to make sure the trans cooler kit i got comes with the fittings and hoses I'd need to run the line from the out side of the radiator, into the aux cooler, and back into the hardline going to the transmission?

Yes, or you could just buy the cooler and get the required fittings and hose at your local auto parts store and probably save a few dollars.

:D

Once you've done one or two, you might buy a bare one and plumb it yourself ... but the kits are nice for the first-timer. BTW, do not ever EVER use those zip-tie things through the radiator to mount the cooler. Get yourself some aluminum angle or something at the hardware store and make brackets.

:doah:

Just ordered this one, but it says it comes with the goodie-bag of parts, so I'm hoping it looks as complete as the one you linked to. Only half as thick though :(

Yep I run a B&M Stacked plate cooler for my 700r4... I mounted it in front of my radiator and run it through the radiator then into the B&M cooler then back to the tranny...

Dremu what do you have against the zip-tie thingys that come with it? I've been running them w/ aluminum sraps on the back of the radiator (zip ties go through it to disperse the load so it doesn't pull on only a couple radiator fins) for a while now with absolutely no problems...

Great investment for a 700r4 imo...

If you are going to use the aux cooler by itself without also plumbimg it into the stock cooler in the radiator get the biggest cooler you can find. At least 28K GVW.
The smaller coolers wont cool enough for a 700R4 when used by themselves.
If you buy a kit cooler it will come with complete instructions and parts.
also if you use your truck offroad a lot it is best to build a bracket to hold the cooler. The kits come with plastic zip tie things that go thru your radiator to mount the cooler in front of the radiator. lots of hard vibration can cause those hard plastic mounts to wear a hole in the cooling tubes and cause a coolant leak.

I'll either be stopping by my dad's shop, or going to Lowe's, to pick up some angle brackets and do some "fabrication" to get it mounted right.

Called Summit back and switched to the larger cooler dremu recommended, and I'll keep it routed through the radiator, also. Guess my next purchase will be a trans fluid temp gauge.

It is very easy to mount those B&M coolers to angle metal. Mine had pre drilled holes and plenty of metal on the top and bottom to work with. I have 2 B &M coolers 1 for trans and one for engine oil.

The zip ties that go through the radiator will rub holes in your radiator and then you will need a new radiator. Radiators aren't made of very hard metal and those ties are pretty stiff.

I originally had mine on there with the zipties and it rubbed holes in my radiator and the guy at the trans shop told me to move it off the radiator so it didn't wick heat into the trans cooler and also so the ties wouldn't rub holes in my new radiator.

It is pretty easy to mount it behind the grill with a couple self tapping screw and some light angle iron or flat strapping.
