Trans fluid burping out fill/level tube on startup

Yeah you'll have to get up close and personal with the trans and reach up to the top and feel around. If no hose on it

Ok, found the vent! It was plugged by a local insect (similar to a wasp) that uses all sorts of round nooks, holes up to the size of a quarter, to hide eggs securely. They cover the access with a white paste that dries hard. It just crumbles when poked revealing whatever never got out. I cleaned it out and found some clear tubing large enough to fit snugly and ran that up to near the wiper motor. I do alot of fjording of arroyos in rainy season and often go through over 2ft. of water so it should be good.
i've also found some threads that mentioned incorrectly installing the filter gasket wrong. I hate to have to check that so I'll advance from here, after the other day that it didn't burp and today that the level at rest was lower........ Glad to learn some more and thanks for your help Wes. Happy motoring.
Ha, I too have a tow horse. 92 Suburban 2500 4x4 Tonawanda 454 8 lug HD at little less grunt but works great. Leveling air bags and HD KONI adjustable shocks (the K5 has them too) sourced from Switzerland (last available I could find) and 1" rear sway bar in poly and 'vortec' FI carb spacer. Drinks like an alcoholic.........
