Trans flush??

I was thinking of taking off my cooler lines and putting the feed into an empty drum and the return into a drum of fresh Dexron to flush out the converter and trans.
Do you think this is feasable?
Will it flush the converter out?
Am I wasting my time?


Should I just go and have another beer and fugetaboutit?:D

They make equipment that would do exactly that. Certainly there is a service station there that would have one. I don't know if that's a good idea or not. I am not sure if it would have enough suction to pull fluid back into the tranny.
 
i to think it would not have the pull to suck fluid in to the tranny from the line. all the machines i have used use a small lift pump to move it to the tranny under vary low pressure.
 
It wont suck the new fluid from the bucket. Easiest way to do it is to drop the pan and change the fliter. Then add the required amount of fluid plus 1-2 quarts more. With the return line disconnected and fed into a bucket (make sure you have the hose secured inside the bucket so it doesnt whip out and flood your area with trans fluid....learned that one the hard way) start the engine and let it run for about 5-10 seconds. Shut it off, add more fluid and repeat until the return fluid is clean. Try not to let the system run low enough where it sucks air. I flush my trans on all my vehicles like this every 25-30K miles and never had a problem.
 
Disconnect the line that goes into the "Top" fitting on the trans. I disconnected mine at the trans cooler which was easy. Again, the fluid will come out at a pretty high pressure and volume so make sure things are secure and you have a deep bucket. I usually go to Costco and buy a case of Chevron (Isosyn) ATF. More than enough to flush and fill and the price is right and its a good fluid. I dont run Syn fluid anymore in my vehicles due to some strange shifting behaviors I have experienced with them.
 
Another tip for this. I used a 5 gallon bucket and made a mark inside of it with 3 quarts in it so as it was pumping out I knew when to stop and how much more to add. That way you won't suck air either.
 
Could you hang a 5 gallon bucket full of fresh fluid above the truck? Then run a line from the bottom of the bucket to the intake line. This would give it some positve flow, but would it be enough?

I just had my 90 Blazer's trans power flushed for about $49.00 it took 10 quarts of ATF and I had no aggravation at all now that's priceless..
 
I don't think there is any suction on that line. It is all positive pressure being pushed through the system. So I don't think the cooler lines could be used to replenish the tranny. It is drawing fluid from the pan.

I've read a book outlining the same method as 88silverado. I was going to do it myself, but decided to pay someone else to do it.
 
I ended up just draining the pan, re-filling then running it through the gears, draining it again etc. I put 4 gallons through it and the last lot came out lovely and clear! That'll do for now. I'm going to put a few hundred miles on it tomorrow then drain it again to see if I have an issue with it.
