Trans rebuild

I have a th400 that is going into my truggy project that needs a rebuild. Wondering if I should attempt it myself. How hard are they? Not to bragg but I can disassemble and assemble pretty much anything and usually fix it LOL. I have just never toar appart a trans. I thought about getting a Monster in a box kit. Or maybe it might be better and cheaper to bring it to a trans shop.
 
Not being on a strict timeline makes this the perfect learning opportunity, no? Get a good manual and have a set up to lay out every piece in order. There are plenty of threads here to search for advice. Keep in mind there are hundreds of pieces, all of which have to be installed just right and very clean or you'll be pulling it out again.

This, depending on the power level of the engine and intended usage there are many options to choose in the way of trans parts and modifications. Fortunately, the 400 is not only very rugged even in stock form but is easy to build stronger. If you need some help selecting parts or mods shoot me a PM:thumb:
 
I'll second the do it yourself statements.

Built two of them on my garage floor with a minimum of tools, both were used hard, sold one running, other is still in a one ton working fine. Never measured anything, just threw them together with new parts and they worked.

Now not saying that is correct, I didn't know better, it was years back, but I think the design is fairly tolerant of clearances, and so tough as-is that normally there isn't much wrong with them in the first place.
