can i get the trans out of my blazer without lifting the engine? its an '88 auto, i allready took out the t-case and it looked like i might not be able to get to all the bolt for the transmission but im not sure. thanks for the help :waytogo:
 
The trans will come out easily. Get yourself a long extension so you can get the upper bell housing bolts from underneath. I've swapped my tranny 3 times already without touching the engine.

Factory manuals say cars, pull the engine and trans together. Trucks, engine up and over the front, tranny and/or T-case out from underneath, seperately or together. There's enough room to get the top 4 bolts, it just looks bad at first.:D
 
thanks guys, thats what i thought i jst wanted to make sure befor i got halfway through and found out i couldnt finish. if it ever stops raining here maybe i can get this damn truck back on the road.

why so many trans-swaps? you beat on it that hard :D im gunna be beating on mine but hopefully i wont be going through trannys like candy.
 
i hate automatics, i refused to buy one ever since i learned the glory of the stick :) i fianally gave in and got one when i got this blazer, was suposed to have been rebuilt but it broke down 2 weeks later just like they allways do. i only got to drive the damn thing like 3 times.
 
Well, i swapped out a blown tranny about 3 years ago with one i had BUILT with all the goodies. The tranny i had built has a very hard 1-2 shift and i fianlly got tired of it and tried to make it shift a little softer to no avail. I had an extra tranny that my first tranny builders brother built for me just before i was going to Pismo for a weekend so i installed it but it had no OD and after giving him the truck to fix ith no sush luck and giving me only a day to get my HARD shifting tranny back in i made the swap again. So now i'm back to my HARD shifting tranny that has ALL gears but just has that hard 1-2 shift. I've tried changing the corvette servo with a standard servo, added the cushion spring behine the servo as they take them out to give a harsher shift and that still didn't work so i played with a few governors and also the TV cable setting and still nothing. If anyone has any bright ideas on how to make my 1-2 shift a bit softer i would appreciate it.
 
I don't know if the '88 has the removable floor section above the tranny or not........

In my '74 it was easy as pie to pop that cover and reach in with an extension for the top bell-housing (tranny) bolts.
 
no, i found out the hard way it doesnt. in the process of "gently" prying it up to see how it comes out it is now so mangled its almost unrecognizable :D and i need new carpet, the old one burns pretty nicley:haha:
 
yeah the torch was a bad idea, i used up all my gas to :( im just gunna cut the rest out and bolt in the older one i have. i just remember though, since were talking about torches any sugestion on what i should use to weld the nuts for the seats back on, they rusted off. i have a 70w (i think) arc welder which i was going to use but then i thought that might not be powerful enuff so i was gunna use my torch but im afraid i might burn through the floor, the metal is pretty thin isnt it?
 
Can't relate, I have an '85 Burb.:D Silverado no less, carpet, padding.
Hey, what happened to cutting with a Sawzall?
