I am looking at replacing my 2wd 700R4. for my 83 c1500 diesel burb.

I found from another member a 4wd 700R4 from a 89 k5 for sale.

Question is, what would I need to do to make this work?

I hear the output shafts are different? So can I swap my old output shaft over to the new trans?

Also, I believe my 83 does not have an electronic lockup for OD... will this have to be addressed for the 89 trans?

Also what are my other options? Is there any direct bolt in options like perhaps the th400? I have 308 gears in the back, so I wouldnt feel so bad about not having OD...

Swapping the output shaft involves taking the tranny COMPLETELY apart as that is the first part that goes in when building a tranny. Also the governor for a gas is different than a diesel.

Ok, Im still all new to this- so somebody help me out here please!!!

on a 700R4, there were two spline options- a 27 and a 30

If you get one with 30, but the old one in your truck was a 27...
(question1)

the most reasonable solution is to get a new converter that is a 30 spline right?

Will the output shaft also be different? Meaning would I have to replace the slip yolk? (thats question 2)

question3: If using a 700R4 from a 4wd unit, and putting it into a 2wd truck, I have to swap the tail sections right? How hard is that?

Question 4: I had thought there was an electronic OD in the later years- is this true?

help please!

There are 2 different spline counts on the stator shaft, 27 or 30. The rear output shaft still remains 27 spline.

If you end up with a trans with the opposite stator spline count then you just need to buy a convertor also (which i would highly recommend anyways).

In order to make a 4wd tranny a 2wd tranny once again you will need to COMPLETELY tear it apart and install a 2wd output shaft and then add the tailhousing.

The 700R4 later became the 4L60E which is full electric.
