the P.O. claimed he rebuilt the transmission (700r4) himself - he also admitted it was his first transmission rebuild . transmission wasn't shifting right on test drive, but it was shifting. I noticed the TV cable wasnt adjusted correctly so I wasn't too worried about the high rpm 1-2 shift - bought the Blazer.

Haven't driven it much but started working on it recently. seemed like the 1-2 shift point kept getting higher until now, no 1-2 shift at all, stays in 1st. pulls hard in first, no slipping. reverse works fine too. I pulled the governor and noticed the piston *does* stick down (toward the gear) - could this be what is preventing the transmission from shifting??

Thanks for reading!

Have you adjusted the TV cable??

yup. that was the first thing I did when I got the Blazer home after buying it. It shifted better, but still not right. got worse the more I drove it. I've checked and adjusted the TV cable several times since then trying to get it to shift again, but no 1-2 shift no matter how the TV cable is adjusted.

The governor valve being stuck can prevent an upshift. If freeing the governor valve does not correct the problem, you could have a sticky tv valve or 1-2 shift valve. Here is a little trick you can try to free the tv valve. Disconnect the tv cable at the carb or throttle body. Grab the small metal stop at the end of the cable with a pair of pliers, and yank hard on it about half a dozen times against it's stop. Reconnect, check adjustment and go for a drive.
