Transfer cas

I have an 89 K5. What are the warning signs of a bad transfer case vs bad trans. When I put it in reverse, it hestates and jumps.

That would indicate transmission not transfercase. Transfer case don't care which way you turn it. All gears and chain.

Are there any noises or other things that might indicate a bad tranfer case.

Why do you suspect that the t-case is bad? Basically they don't have a high failure rate, except if the truck is lifted, with bigger tires, and high horsepower. An '89 would have a 700R4 trans and an NP208 t-case. I'd be a lot more likely to suspect trans problems than t-case problems.
