This is a basic question but I couldn't find the answer already posted so here goes:

My transfer case seems to be VERY full. At least it was. I changed out the rear output seal on my NP241 on Sunday. When I gently persuaded the old seal out with a big screw driver and a hammer, fluid started running out. Not just a little, a steady stream for several seconds. I thought it was strange but figured some fluid was trapped up there. After I put the new seal in, I pulled the fill plug to make sure the T case had enough fluid. As soon as I pulled the plug a bunch more fluid ran out. At least half a quart.

How the hell do you fill the case way past the fill plug???

Is there a good reason to do this?

The input seal is shot. You need to pull the t-case and install a new input seal. The factory seal is a double lip seal the prevents trans fluid from entering the t-case and alslo prevents t-case fluid from enter the trans. All the replacement seals i've seen are narrow single lip seals and require 2 seals to be installed opposite of each other to resemble the original double lip.

Not the news I was hoping for but thanks for answering. How much of a PITA is it getting the transfer case out? This is my first Blazer just in case you can't tell.

I can have mine out in about 20 minutes. You don't even need a jack since they're so light. Since you said it's a 241 that means you either have a 89-91 blazer or some other year with a swapped in t-case? The 241 cases the front adapter mounting bolt holes are blind in the case meaning that fluid will not come pouring out if you tilt the case after it's unbolted unlike the 208 cases where those holes are through into the case and will leak fluid once you pull the bolts out. Just something for you or anyone else to know.

You know your stuff. My truck is an 89. If you can take yours out in 20 minutes I'll be happy to get mine out in an hour. Seems like everything I've done so far has been harder than it should be. It could also be that I suck at this
