My NP241 just started making noise when I have the truck in 4WD. It sounds like someone trying to drive stick that doesn't know how. The truck every once and a while will give out a loud wine like someone trying to shift without using there clutch but it only lasts about 2-3 seconds at a time. Could it just need a linkage adjustment or could the little plastic boots that are on the end of the fork inside be gone?

You may have found the problem, the plastic boot thingys. When it makes that noise, try applying pressure on the shifter so as to move the fork slightly, not shift, just pressure on it to see if the noise goes away. If it does, you've found your problem.

I would verify that the slip joint in the front driveshaft is not worn out first. Then look to the t-case. I took my 241 apart at about 160,000 miles, and it looked perfect inside, even the little plastic thingys.
