Have 1973, 350 cuin, automatic, full time 4wd NP203 that has MileMarker conversion to part time 4WD.

Neither the High or low 4wd will engage.

Anyone had experience with these. I am at a loss. Don't want to tear the transfer case out to find a simple solution.

Spray lubrication into the shifter mechanism/case. They dry out and won't shift.

Thanks for the diagram.
That should get things straight. If not, the transmission shop will have to go back into it.

I take it by this comment that you just had work done on the tranny/t-case? Is that when the problem started?

Actually, had transmission rebuilt and the transfer case changed over with the Milemarker kit well over a year ago. However, the truck was in the shop till the past month or so. Just put front driveshaft in last week, tested 4WD this past week and found out that the winch works fine. (4WD non existant.)

shift mecdhanism that moves the 4WD

selector will not move into either low or high 4WD. Even trying to move it with a screw driver.

I'm kinda mystified.

Hmm... well I've never installed a part time kit in a 203 myself (although I'm running one installed by the previous owner) but it seems like since the 4wd hasn't worked since all this work was done on it that something went wrong with the install. So the shifter won't move at all huh? Like the t-case is frozen in "4 hi" (meaning 2 hi after the conversion)?

This seems ridiculous but check to see if the shifter mechanism itself is dry. When the 203 shifter dries out - it will not go into lock (high or low). The lever will only allow movement one one side of the mechanism to go from high to low range but it will not allow movement of the other mechanism (hi lock/lo lock).

I have had two trucks that did the same thing. Spray some lube into the mechanism and see if it loosens up.

Check the shifter lever while unhooked from the x-fer case.

Is the transmission in neutral when going into lock and unlock?

It will go into hi2WD-nuetral-low 2WD, but neither of the 4WD (lock positions)

That's the exact behavior I'm talking about. I always suggest starting with the most simplistic attempt at a fix and then look deeper.

Make sure the transmission is in neutral... wiggling the gearshift a bit to make sure it *knows* it's in neutral as I think there's a mechanism that prevents you from locking up the t-case with the tranny in any position other than N. If some alignment of linkage is just a bit off (on tranny OR t-case) this could be the problem? Maybe?
