so say someone were to want to run different gear ratios in a truck, and compensate with tires to offset the gears, so they're close. how much difference is too much? factoring in tires, i've come up with just under 1% difference, with the lower ratio being in the front.

FWIW, the tires in question are 35 x 10.50 x 15 Boggers, with 3.73s in the front axle, and 38.5 x 15 x 15 Boggers with 4.10s in the rear.

I read an article about this years ago. IIRC you can have more than 1% difference just by your tires having unequal tread or not having equal air pressure. I don't think 1% will cause you any problems.

I've heard the same, that right around 1% is acceptable.

However, in my own personal opinion, with all the loose surfaces we drive on and the tire speed we use, you could probably go with a lot more differentiation and not do damage.
