Hey guys, this is my first real post on this forum; hope I don't sound too green but I have a question about my transfer case which doesn't seem to be working correctly.
My first Blazer (72 K5) had a 205 transfer case with the '4H - 2H - N - 4L' shifter knob. Simple enough.
Now, my 73 K5 seems to have a 203 case. The numbers I can get off of it match with a 203, plus it has a plate at the shifter that shows the '4L loc - 4L - N - 4H - 4H loc' pattern.
The truck came with front locking hubs, which I replaced. Here are my questions:
To my understanding, this is a full-time 4WD system, correct? How do I tell if it's been modified (hence, the locking front hubs)?
Should the hubs stay locked with the shifter in 4H for normal driving? What is the speed limit in this position?
Lastly, the transfer case strongly resists shifting of any kind. Coming out a slow turn and transitioning from brake to gas, the transfer case will sometimes slip out of gear and it takes me 10 minutes to get it back into a driveable gear. Lots of cringey gear gnashing sounds.
My research has led me to the conclusion that a 205 coupled to a 700r (I currently have a TH400) is just going to be more reliable and better on gas - just a better setup all around. Unfortunately, that kind of investment is not in my near future. Any thoughts?
