I'm no stranger to turning a wrench, so how hard is it to rebuild a 241 case? Are there any places semi local to me that offer this service?

Yeah, I'll probably try to do it myself. My main thing is not knowing what all I should replace....chain, pump, etc. I was hoping some people with prior expertise would be able to share tips and knowledge. My odometer now has 180k on it and the output bearing in the case seems to be fairly sloppy. I just don't want to replace parts that don't need it.

I just finished rebuilding a NP241. -My first time rebuilding any t-case. Since you're "no stranger to wrenches", you can do it.

Take your time, have a nice clean t-case to start with, a clean workbench to work on, and take good pics as you tear it down. There really isn't much to the NP241. I bought my rebuild kit from JB Conversions, along with their SYE kit. The rebuild kit is very complete. Oh, and I replaced the chain too; the old one had quite a bit of slack in it. With 180k on yours, it could probably use a complete rebuild.

No need to replace the pump. There isn't much to it, and there is a pickup screen to keep large garbage from getting into it. You'll see once you split the case.

As I'm sure you've read, if you've researched this rebuild at all, you'll need a shop press and snap-ring pliers. Actually, you'll really need some lock-ring pliers ($10 at Napa). Trying to remove lock-rings with snap-ring pliers took me the most time of the entire rebuild. But the snap-ring pliers do help with a couple of the different pieces.

Anyway, ask any questions, and feel free to browse my albums for pics on my recent rebuild.

Thank you for the reply Adam. I was just making a list of the parts for the rebuild yesterday actually and should be set on the tools. I will definitely take a look at your pics.

Thanks again!

So, my truck has 339k miles on it and I have no idea if the T-case has been rebuilt/touched or not.

I'm thinking a new chain as well as a rebuild kit.....but would I also need to get a new shaft too? Can the teeth wear down on both ends as time goes by?

The old 10 spline stuff used to wear, I have yet to see 27 or 32 spline wear out.

Yeah, I don't think you should worry about the shaft splines wearing. The "wear parts" are the chain, bearings, seals, fork pads, etc. In other words, everything in a rebuild kit.

one more vote on the 241 being easy.

I have done several t cases over the years so I am pretty familiar with them. I had mine apart and back together in a couple hours. Dang near the easiest I have ever done

They are quite simple. From time to time I help out a buddy who owns a repair shop. One week I repaired an NP261 or something with $70 in parts, and an auto 4wd version on an NP241 for $35 in parts. He couldn't believe it. Said remans were like $1,500.

I know this is an old thread but where is a good place to get parts? I'm looking for a chain for my 241. I'd rather not buy one off ebay.

Thanks

This. I did the JBConversions SYE on my 241. Did it by myself in about 2 hours. x2 on the snap rings. I had a really crappy pair, and thats the only reason why it took me 2 hrs :haha:. I also had a HF press to remove bearings and stuff. It was a really easy job. Your pump is probably fine....you would know if your pump was out (in a couple thousands miles probably) and the shaft is probably fine too, but you can look at it as you split the case. But once you do it, you realize how simple of a tcase it really is.

Assuming you're working with a 241C (Chevy), you can get a new stock replacement, Borg Warner, Made in the U.S.A. chain direct from JB Conversions. http://www.jbconversions.com/index2.php?pc=6

That one you found on eBay claims to be a true Borg Warner chain (that's the original manufacturer). Not a bad price actually. Just do your homework and make SURE its appropriate for your application (email the seller and "talk shop" with him). "Buyer Beware". I've personally had plenty of good experiences with eBay though.
