Transfer Case Shifter Question

The transfer case shifter on my '89 Blazer only moves between 2H and 4H (it won't go into neutral or 4L). The problem's definitely the shifter, not the transfer case. The linkage between the two is fine. Is there some "trick" to getting it to go into 4L? I've tried pushing down on the knob, pulling up on it, making sure the transmission is in low gear, neutral, park, etc., but no luck. I'm thinking maybe something is jammed up, but before I take the shifter apart I wanted to make sure I'm not just doing something wrong.

TIA.

Truck in neutral and stopped. Pull back and to the right. If the shifter has been taken apart, the plastic "indicator" needs to ebe lined up before the shifter is put back on or it will stick and only allow you into 4hi. Takes about 5 mins and a phillips head to check, but if the indicator is not moving when you pull the lever, that could be it.

I'll try that (I was pulling straight back). The indicator seems to move okay when I shift between 2H and 4H.

Ya, I have had times where you have to be in Neutral to get the truck into 4 low...
