I am having some transfer case problems, it doesn't want to shift out of 4 high. I checked all the linkages and they were fine. Then I checked the oil level and couldn't feel any even about an inch and a half below the fill whole (damn the PO). I checked and filled the diffs and transmission but apparently I missed the transfer case. I have only driven it about 10 miles in the last 3 years due to the buildup and it has shifted fine until today. How bad do you think I messed the case up? is the shifting problem related to the lack of lube?

Shifting in a 205 is helped a lot by oil, even just being low could cause shifting problems (ask me how I know). Most likely, if it wasn't completely dry, you will have suffered no damage to gears with the limited amount of driving. Fill it, and then run it a little to get the oil circulated, shifting should improve noticeably. If it doesn't then it was probably run much longer than you think with little to no oil.

I tried backing up but no dice. I have to get more 80 90 weight and will try again after I run it a while. Thanks for the help and hopefully nothing is messed up in there

I drove it around a little yesterday, not far because the engine wasn't running right, but after it shifted just fine. I am going to drain the oil when I get a chance and see if there is any metal shavings then go from there

you probably wont get any shavings out of it because there is a magnet inside of the 205, or at least mine had one. I wouldn't worry that much about running 10 miles low on oil as those cases are crazy strong, and it probably isnt bone dry anyway. My $0.02; Just refill it and go. Try backing up to get it out of gear as well.

Its pretty unlikely that the t-case has suffered any damage, but you never know how long it has been run with a low fluid level.

Like has been suggested before, move the truck directly forward/backard a bit and then (after shifting into neutral) try to shift the t-case. You may have to try this a couple times. 205's can be fairly hard to shift.

I am glad to hear it. Sounds like it may not have suffered any damage. One nice thing is that the 90w is pretty heavy oil, and it tends to stick around.

I thought transmission fluid was used in t-cases. When I drained my 208, it had ATF in it. And that's what I filled it up with. Was this wrong?

not sure about 208's but in 205's definitely 80-90 weight. Most newer cases do use trany fluid, np241's for example
