Transfer case trouble

So I've got a NP208 behind a 700r4 and the 208 is acting up. After some driving around off road in 4hi I attempted to shift back to 2 wheel and the lever was jammed solid keeping me in 4hi. I tried going through all the ranges with no luck so I packed it in and figured it would be a trip home in 4 wheel. There was a noise coming from below the truck that sounded similar to rubbing sandpaper against itself. Before I hit the pavement I was able to get back to 2 wheel and the noise vanished. I found that both the bolts securing the transfer case to its mount were missing and I can move the whole assembly about a half inch left and right. After another test drive in 4hi I was getting a grinding noise and a fairly consistent thump from under the vehicle. Trying to shift out of 4hi was again very hard and there was a good amount of grinding. Any chance I may get lucky and find that the missing mounting bolts were allowing the transfer case to torque and jump causing incomplete shifts between 2wd and 4hi as well as misalignment or am I doomed to rebuild a transfer case? HELP!!

Definitely sounds related to the mount being broke. Fix that before you spend money on anything else. If the case is not in the right place the shifter lever will not work right.

Our hunch was correct, once I sourced the proper size bolt (10mm X 1.5 and 25mm long) with some help from the fine folks in the garage forum everything is shifting smoothly and not grinding. Plus it seems the case is still in good shape save the leaking shaft seal which was leaking previously. Thanks for providing your feedback:waytogo:
