What do you guys use between the transfer case and the adaptor silicone or a gasket? I have been trying fto find the gasket but th e places local to me only sell it in a rebuild kit. Do you guys think just using silicone will have any problems down the line?

When I rebuilt the transfer case I used red rtv sealant including between the adapter and case. No leak or seapage.

I don't think they make a gasket for that application....at least I've never been able to locate one but after some searching I read that silicone is used most if not all the time.

I tried the major auto parts stores and even some local trasmission shops and can not find one so Im guessing silicone would do just fine. would I have to let it set for any period of time before i added fluid to the case.

Some applications use a thin paper gasket and others use a thick fiber gasket that also acts as a shim.

It's hard to answer your question without information.

Silicone or a gasket is fine for that application.

Figure 8 NP205's need a gasket, NP208's and NP241's do not.

Awesome info guys so Im gonna reinstall it with the silicone. So the gray one is the best right?

Permatex's Right Stuff in the "cheese wizz" can is the best imo. Ive seen that stuff hold a thermostat housing on with one snapped bolt in the intake and no leaks for over a year and i bet its still sealed to this day. :thumb: I use it on tcases, water pumps, diff covers, across the front and rear intake seal surfaces, thermostat housings, and anywhere else a critical gasket isnt needed. No leaks, EVER. :pimp:

I have the figure 8 205 and have used permatex black between the trans adapter and transfer case for years. No problems yet. I let it sit on the adapter for at least 15 minutes before I bolt it on. That way it is slightly tacky and seals better. I wait at least a few hours for the silicon to dry before I add fluid.
