77 k5 350 turbo tranny 205 t case. Once I hit 20 mph sounds like a chain dragging down the road. Help

More info needed. Lifted? U-joints check ok? Coming from front or back? If driveshaft is removed, does the sound go away?

Lift 4 in 35s. U joints all good checked all them first. And sounds like it's coming from the t case

Your rear pinion angle is most likely off. Do you have any angle shims in the rear?

Yeah, sounds like what mine was doing. There are a couple things you can do.

1. Drop the t-case cross member an inch or so to help with the output angle.

2. Shim the rear axle to correct your pinion angle.

I went the route of dropping the cross member an inch. It got rid of my noise completely.

Which is not a good idea.

If you are going to drop the transfer case, use some bar stock.

Are you sure you have an NP205? That was not available in a 1977 K5 with a TH350.

You shouldn't drop the case to begin with. You should be able to shim the rear and get your angles correct with a 4" lift..

Lowering the crossmember especially with those "spacers" isn't the best way to fix this. For one that's not what those sleeves are for and using them creates stress points on an already weak frame. Two lowering the crossmember only helps with the rear angle, but actually hurts the front angle by pointing it up.

IF you think you must lower the case then solid stock is a better option than those "spacers"

To correct your angles you need to grab an angle finder from your local hardware store. Find the case ouput and pinion input angle and basically they should be parallel. Many people recommend running the pinion 1-2 degrees down from parallel to account for axle wrap under power.

are you sure it's a 205? Sounds like my 203 with a stretched chain dragging on the case.

edit- Martin beat me to it

Ah, so someone swapped it in. Does it have a fixed yoke, or a slip yoke on the rear.

Martin

I do agree with not dropping the case, my truck does not drive on the road at all hardly. The correct way is shims.
