TRANSFERCASE LOWERING

Does anyone know where I can get a transfer case lowering kit for my 1987 K5? How much do they cost? How hard are they to install, and how long do they take to install? Feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've always just flipped the spacers on the stock cross member from above the frame to in between the frame and cross memeber. How high is your suspension lift?

It's stock now, but i'm getting an echobit flip rear (5 3/4 inches) and 4" tuff country front springs.

I took 2 pieces of 1" thick plate about 3 inch by 4 inch and drilled some 1/2" thru holes. Used that to drop the cross member. It has been working great for 2 years.

At first I used the spacers but I found that they have a tendency to cause dimples in the frame if you land on the t case to hard so now I use 1" square tubing to disperse the load across the frame. Other than that it's a piece o cake. Put a juck beneath the case. remove the four bolts, lower it a few inches, install whatever spacers you use and jack it back it and reinstall the bolts.

Skyjacker sells one but you can make your own. All it is, is a spacer. And find out if you need it before you do it. No reason to give back clearance you just installed.

u COULD, BUT when you start lowering it, make sure the engine/distributor doesnt get stuffed into the firewall. I would say no more than 2". and that would be pushing it. Also, i dont beleive anyone makes anything besides a 1" so itd be custom.

i've seen guys use 1" square tubing, you should be able to get that at any hardware store. it's a lot cheaper thatn the lowering kits too. i saw one kit for about $80. right now i'm using the spacers that came on mine from the factory, but plan on changing to square tubing in the near future. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It would put a lot of stress on the motor mounts as well. Remember, think "tilting" not "lowering"

I wouldnt loose much clearance, I belive the bottom of my frame is 35". 1" isnt going to hurt.
