Sorry if this is been covered before in another thread. I did a search but found nothing. Doing a swap this weekend, 700r4 to 700r4. Is it going to be easier for me to pull the transfercase first then the trans or do I need to pull them as one? And yes I know I spelled transmission wrong, I didn't notice it till it was too late.

i like to pull them as one and put them back up as one, i find it easier in the long run, but i also have a tranny jack and an extra set of hands, if u are doing it by your lonesome u will probably have to pull them one by one, espescially if all you got is a floor jack

engine didnt move. transmission doesnt support the engine. so your really dont need to do anything to support the engine, if your just pulling the trans, also if your truck has a removable trans hump it makes it way easier.

That would be wrong, the transmission and transfer case support the rear of the engine. You only have two motor mounts, aproximately centered on the engine, it is going to want to tilt back when they are out.

OP - Normally I just use a floor jack and a block of wood underneath the engine to support the backside and prevent the dist. from being destroyed.

I just pulled mine the other day and first I sat a jack under the tranny and took off the TC. I am a small dude and could handle the tcase alone. Then I unbolted the tranny and lowered the jack so that it was sitting on the exhaust and got a friend to help me muscle it back and down. The exhaust supported it fine.

Ive replaced numerous transmissions in my trucks and never had a problem the engine going into the firewall, when pulling them, maybe im lucky who knows, but its never been a problem, and if its a concern i would just rachet strap it to the core support from the engine lift points, instead of supporting the oil pan because this would provide more room underneath.

I like that rachet strap idea. Thanks for that. So far tonite I've pulled the exhuast out (opens up alot of room), both driveshafts, all the braces and linkages, and 4 of the 6 bellhousing bolts. In the morning I'll pull it as one unit using an ATV jack that has a wide support area and another jack for the transfercase. Almost half way there!!

Got it all done and buttoned up. It's nice to have 2nd and 4th again. Although one thing I should point out is that the PO put 80-90 gear oil in the transfer case. (NP208) If I had not had to fix the trans, I never would have noticed. BTW thanks chevyuser74 for that rachet strap idea, it worked like a charm.

Glad it went well! I just did the same thing not too long ago with a floor jack and some plywood. I did the t-case and trans separately, but I can see that if you have a jack big enough, it would be easier to do them together. The T-case is such an odd shape to try to lift with a jack. I'm sure if I tried to bench press it I wouldn't be able to get it to line up and I would end up dropping it on my head :yikes: I used a ratchet strap as well, but under the oil pan - not damage, but I think I like ChevyUser74's idea better.
