roughly how much shoud it cost for a complete rebuild of a th400 with a shift kit? before i call around, i want to have a ballpark figure...

also, i read somewhere (i think 4 wheeler) that i can use a torque converter from a 6.2 diesel and it would have a better stall speed for offroad stuff? can anyone shed some light on this?

For a bench rebuild (you taking them just the trans), I think around $750-$800 is about right. It should come with a new (remanufactured) converter. For them to pull it...expect to pay another $400-$500.

I don't know about the 6.2 converter.

I had mine rebuilt with and a S-kit installed (reman converter) and it was $852 that also included a new flywheel.

For me, $225 for the kit and converter, and then to a friend to rebuild it, free.

pretty sure the rebuild kit is just under 100 bucks, then you gotta put it together. i hear its reasonably easy.

I considered doing it myself or at least trying to, but since i will be using the burb for out of town wheeling, i dont trust myself to do it.. i would rather pay a reputable shop to do it for "peace of mind".

do i want a lower stall speed for offroad? or higher?..

With a shop doing it you get a warranty too.

For stall speed, generally around stock is good for wheeling. Unless you're doing mud drags.
