Smoked the transmission in my daily. Lost 3rd and 4th gear and the oil smells burnt.
Truck is a 2005 Z71 crewcab with I’m pretty sure a 4l60e.
The transmission shop wants $1500 plus tax to r&r the trans and to rebuild it, comes with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Should I just do that, or get a transmission from somewhere like monster transmissions for $1,200 and do it myself?

If you can get them to swap it and rebuild it for that I’d go that way.
Definitly do not give any money to monster. They’re just monster pieces of shit.
If you want to do the work I’d check out @Greg Ducato for a trans.

I’ve heard about how terrible monster is, I was just using them as an example. Summit wants $1,600 for a 4l60e

I’d go with the local service for $1500 assuming they do quality work.

What about time? I'm all about saving a buck by swapping crate reman but do you have the opportunity to do it quickly?

Its hard to beat $1500 with a warranty and not picking up a wrench.

Not saying they are any good but a good buddy has had a monster trans behind a 383 in his Tahoe for 5 years now. No issues, normal towing included.

They said that price is for me to drop off the truck and pick it up when it's done.

I'm going manual with my 86. Rejoining the 3rd pedal family!
Just tired of replacing 700r4s. Not bad mouthing them, they were either well worn or in new to me trucks with unknown histories.

My dd has been sitting for about 3 yeas now. Cast iron gearboxes are hard to beat.

Local job including r&r go for it.

$1500 is an unbeatable price for a turn key job if the quality is there, easily $1K less than the average in this part of the world... One question to ask them is if they use any Sonnax or other upgrade parts on the valve body, in particular the AFL valve assembly and TCC regulator, these are two very bad wear areas and will kill a fresh build if not tended to. Just FYI

I dropped it off this morning, when I go to pick it up later this week or next week I’ll ask that. This place is the only reputable place in my area

I paid just under $1,000 to have mine rebuilt but that was with me doing the R&R....it wasn't a daily driver so big hurry. There are some advantages to having a local shop do the complete job. If you ever have any issues there is no fighting about the install being done wrong, or having to pull it and ship it someplace to be looked at.

Second the comment about staying away from Monster. A buddy of mine bought a "heavy duty" version for this work van from them several years ago. He usually rebuilds his own trans but it damaged the case so it was easier and cheaper, or so he thought, to just order a trans from them and slap it in. He only got a few months of use out of it before it starting slipping badly. Sure, Monster has a warranty but he would be responsible for removing the trans, paying for shipping, and then hoping they decide to fix it under warranty. He wound up just buying the rebuild parts and doing it himself. When he pulled the "heavy duty" Monster trans apart none of the internals were upgrades parts and he found a lot of installation errors in it.

You found a great price at the local
Place. The junkyard I go to wants 500 plus core for the same thing but I pull it and replace it. Most trans shops want upwards of 2-3 grand to do the swap. If you can trust that shop you getting a awesome price. Hope it works out. At least they’re local if there’s issues.
