Transmission Bang

Thanks to the folks on this board I was able to adjust my TV cable to finally adjust my transmission the way it needed to be. I had the tranny shop fix the bang, but then they left me with a Blazer that wound out to 25 mph in 1st gear before it would shift to 2nd gear. I told them that wasn't acceptable, and they appeared to feel it was, but said they would tear it apart again.

I followed the advice here and now have it shifting where it needs to.

Thanks fellow Blazer fans!

Nice truck! Hope the transmission is fixed. The smoke could be a relatively minor issue, but you probably want to know for sure what is causing it. The small block engine is prone to wearing out valve seals, usually causing smoke (blue) when you first start it up. If they are really bad, you can get it when hitting the gas at any time. To check the rings just do a compression check of the cylinders. The tool is 15-20 dollars - just take out the spark plug and crank the engine over a couple of times (with the coil unhooked!). You need to look for consistent numbers among the eight cylinders. One or two that are low could be rings or valves.

Did the tranny shop rebuild, or just rip you off for a fiddle? :frown1: If you're going to perform a compression test, don't forget to open the throttle. Otherwise you'll get a low reading. The rate of rise is also indicative of ring/cylinder condition. You might want to tape the short extension to the plug socket, as it can get stuck on the plug, and is hard to get off. If not mentioned before, consistency is more important than high number. Good idea to spray threads with WD 40 or eqivalent. To test for worn rings, as opposed to valves, sqirt a little oil (engie or trans, not imp.) into cylinder. If reading increases more than, lets say 10%, rings are worn. No or little increase might indicate burned valve. Good luck.
