I will be ordering a transmission cooler for my truck shortly and I am debating between these two:

and

Is the plate-type really worth the added cost? This is for my trail rig, th-350 with reverse manual valve body, kevlar internals, 2000rpm stall

Im also going with this tranny pan as well:

thanks

The stacked plate cooler is a much better cooler. Why buy one with a fan? Unless you're crawling all day and already have trans overheat issues the fan isn't required. I would buy the B & M stacked plate cooler part number BMM-70266 from Summit Racing.

I bought the summit brand deep finned aluminum pan for my 700 on my burb. I like those aluminum pans, they're strong and hold extra fluid.

Just don't ever let them get hit on a rock or whatever because you'll then have a leaking, maybe gushing trans pan. :deal:

I thought the fan would be nice to have since I plan on mounting the cooler behind the cab on my flatbed. This is a brand new trans so i dont know how hot it runs. Im trying to get the truck ready for a trail run next month so the fan probably wouldnt be hooked up anyway. Do you think its unnessecary(sp?)

My new t-case skid plate is going to have some trans pan protection built in

I don't know about the B&M cooler. I bought and installed one a little over a year ago for cooling my engine oil, and now it's leaking like a sieve. Other people say they haven't had any problems with them, but I am inclined to replace it with something else...

FWIW the B & M cooler is a Long (brand) cooler which is what the factory used for the engine cooler on the later rigs that came factory with one.

So do you think it would be ok mounted behind the cab? I wont be using the cooler in the radiator

if it has its own fan with good air flow i say it would be fine
ther is one outther that has a oil and trans in 1 unit i plan on trans and PS in that unit

why dont u use the cooler in the radiator AND a trans cooler infront of the radiator that way you have one less elecrical draw on the system.

Well im kind of in a rush here, trying to get everything done. I just thought that putting a cooler on the flatbed would be quick and easy. Whats the best way to flush out the cooler in the radiator if I decide to go that route?

dunno, and auto shop with a trans flusher
i think i will try compressed air with the regulator turned down. Alright im going with the stacked plate style and i will mount it in front of the radiator. Gotta get this ordered so that its here by the weekend

I just did that larger Derale w/out the stock cooler + the B&M filter/temp gauge last summer and it has been great. It will warm up to 150 or so under normal driving and the fan will kick in going up mtn passes and crawling around all day in 80* heat. The temp gauge gives me a lot of confidence as my last trans blew after 2 wheeling trips.

btw it's a 700R w/ 3:73 35"s that doesn't see OD

I think you'll want to hook the fan up to be safe

My Suburban has one as an oil cooler.... I just noticed that today. Even has similar dimensions to the 70266.. Says Long, Made in Canada.

I ended up with the 70264. Little smaller but should cool plenty good for my uses on my street queen Suburban. Haven't installed it yet, waiting till I replace the radiator at the end of this month. I did make the brackets already out of some angle iron.. little cutting, drilling, and some rattle can black :D
