Just bought an 85 k5 and the guy i bought it from said the transmission (th350) was no good. He said he had just had it rebuilt (looked like it, new paint and gaskets) and the first time he drove it he "gassed" on it and it hasnt worked since. The rebuild was done by a very respectable shop and i really dont think it was something on their end. The guy said he installed it himself so.... What are some of the possibilities that could be wrong?

torque converter bolts or spacing may not be ingaged completly.
even easier shift linkage or t case linkage or position it may just be in N that sure would be nice.Fluid level check while running.

Not a lot of "user serviceable parts" in a tranny, especially a simple one like that.

As Mnstrburbon says, it coulda been installed wrong.

If the guy didn't slide the torque converter all the way onto the input shaft, the tranny may not be turning. OTOH, how you could do that and not notice :dunno: I'm not sure you could even bolt the tranny to the motor at that point. :screwy: Look for a gap between the motor and the bellhousing, like, I donno, 1/4 or 1/2"?

If the torque converter wasn't bolted to the flywheel, that could do it too ... again, whoever did it shouldn't be allowed to touch transmissions :haha: Three bolts around the circumference, remove the inspection/dust cover... should be at least one visible.

And, as mentioned, the various linkages could be out of whack, especially the transmission one as it has to be undone when R&R'ing the transmission.

Is there fluid in it? Sounds stupid, but I've seen it before.

Doubtful that the convertor bolts are missing because this statement makes it appear that he "drove" it for at least some short distance before "gassing" it.

drop the pan to see if the filter is still in place. If its laying in the pan its not circulating oil.

Update.... the reverse is working fine but none of the drive gears are working, i can hear the engine rpms change when i put it in drive but it doesnt move an inch. There is fluid in it but it kinda smells burnt. yeh the guy didnt do a very good job, most everything has loose bolts think he was in a hurry to get it rollin. It wouldnt be something wrong with the tcase would it? Pics coming this afternoon!

Sounds internal in the trans to me. If it were something in the t-case case then it's doubtful you would get reverse either.

Does it have a vacuum modulator on it? If so, pull it out and see if there is a valve (as in valve body type.....3-4" long and 3-4 different diameter steps on it). If this isn't in there it will go to direct clutch mode, and burn up quickly.

i think that that valve may have went bad and was not replaced. I googled it and some of the symptoms were exactly what the guy was telling me was wrong before he replaced the trans! guess he didnt swap it and burnt up the replacement. :doah: Ive almost got it dropped so im gonna take it to the shop monday. Thanks everyone for all the help!

did that aluminum case make you think it was a lightweight?

The 208 is fairly light. I bench pressed mine in a few times. Now if it were a 205 or 203...then I'm looking for the jack.

That fluid looks good, nice red color. What does the stuff in the transmission look like? Even though it sounds like you figured out the problem.
