ok just bought a K5 with a th350 transmission. the guy i bought it from said that he and the previous owner put a shift kit in it. it ran good for some time and then will not shift beyond 1st gear. says he thinks it might be a vacuum line or even the module itself. Any ideas or suggestions from others out there that have faced this same issue or something along these lines.

Pretty common problem. Check the vacuum line from the back of the intake manifold to the vac modulator on the trans. It can get knocked off or crack/break. If the vac line is good the modulator is most likely bad.

Usually if its a modulator/vacuum hose problem.it'll go into second gear ok,but not third,it'll take shifting it manually or winding it up to 40-50 mph in second gear before it'll upshift into third in "drive" by itself..then once its in third,it'll feel like you shifted to neutral when you back off the throttle,or "coast"..

If all you have is first and reverse, its probably the nylon gear on the govenor, which is located on the drivers side of the rear of the tranny, near the tailshaft--the cover usually either just pries off ,it might have a wire bail like a master cylinder on it you must move to the side to allow the tin cover to be pried off gently--you can pull the govenor out easily by hand, and then see if the nylon gear is chewed up..its pretty simple to replace, just drive the roll pin out and put a new gear on and put the pin back in..I'm sure there is other threads here on doing it!..

ummm dumb question lol where do i get the nylon gear and such at? is it a kit that i ask for or a specific name?

GM dealer sells them, but I grabbed a complete govenor from a junkyard tranny when my van chowed the govenor gear..but the govenors are supposedly "tuned" to the vehicle going by axle ratio and engine type,so it might be wise to replace the gear..they dont cost much but the dealer might not have one right on the shelf, since TH350's aren't a "recent" tranny....a tranny shop would probably have one they will sell you ..
