hey guys im looking to replace my transmission. what is the best one that i could find in a junk yard and be good for gas and power? my truck has the 350 motor with 37 inch tires. also where could i find some 456 gears for the rear end?
thanks,
Danny

Well, what does it have in it now?

And, is it broken, or are you looking for an upgrade?

If so, you looking for strength or gas mileage or both?

Also, stick or auto?

i have a 700r that has real low gears in it. the guy i bought it from called them "mud gears" and i dont like it because it has no acceleration so to get it up to speed i have to use alot of gas. i want a transmission that will give me better acceleration, mpg, and still have some power to it. and its auto

The 700r4, if axles are geared right, is a great gas milage tranny. It sounds like the slow take off is because of the current gearing you have now running 37" tires.
And you're probably gonna need 5.13 gears to run that big of tire with the 700r4.
If your transmission is shifting good and strong, and it's not broken, regear the axles first and see if that takes care of the slow take off.
I went from 3.42 w/32" tire to 4.10 and that made a big difference.

Others will chime in with other options, but I favor the 700r4 for the low gear w/np241 and OD.

I suspect that with 411 gears and 37 inch tires you are geared too high for the 700R4 to have good acceleration.

I also have a 700 and still had 4.10 gears when I went to 37's. It was not a great setup. Swapping to 4.88s made things much better. There is not much difference between 4.88 and 5.13, so if you find a good deal on 4.88, don't be afraid of it.

What exactly are these "mud gears"? The only alternate gearing I'm aware of is PATC "power gears" which is a close ratio planetary set. 1st and 2nd gear are not as low as the standard 700 gears.

The 700 you have is the best all around power/economy trans available, like others have said, re-gear for the 37's and your power will come back.
