To start ill say i know absolutly nothing about transmissions and how they work. My truck is set up with 350/700r4/np208 I started noticing a weird, squealing/whistling sound every now and again as I'm driving, some times it' really not noticeble, sometimes it's loud enough to be heard over exhaust and radio. I jacked up the rear yesterday and started to spin one of the tires and you hear a distinctive click and squeaking sound. If you spin the tire faster the click has less of a pause between them and the squeak picks up. My cousin says he 100% hears it from the transmission. Any one know of a place to start diagnosing? I did pull the torque converter cover off, as far as i could tell there was no problem (no cracked flexplate, all bolts seamed tight)

So,you were turning the tires by hand, with the engine off,and the transmission in neutral ?...

If so,the only parts moving would be the drive shaft, main shaft in the transmission and some other internal parts--not the torque converter or pump,so I would guess you might have a u-joint that has at least one cap full of rust and no grease, that is making the noise--it could travel into the transmission and amplify it and made it sound like it is coming from the transmission....could be in the transfer case too...

Yes truck off in neutral tires moving by hand, that makes so much sense I feel like a moron for not even thinking about that haha thanks I'll be sure to check them joints out!

Also now that I'm thinking about it, the transfer case if a used one pulled out of a junk yard. If it were coming from there, what would I be looking for?

U-joints can feel "tight" with them in place on the vehicle--often its not apparent they were dry of grease and or rusty,or had the needle bearings rust away until you take them out and pull off the caps..

If it does some like its coming from further up ,like in the transfer case or tranny,it could be multiple things--like a bearing on its way out, something not getting enough lube,etc...

I have had an old hard dried up oil seal on a 2wd transmission rear output, that the slip yoke slides on, create a disturbing squeal at speed intermittently, with no oil leakage..turned out the brass bushing in the tail shaft was sloppy too,so I had to replace both..was happy that got the noise to go away!..also cured a vibration it had at highway speeds.

Hmm I did replace my u joint against the rear axle yesterday because of play so I guess I'll be checking out the one on the slip yoke haha. Thanks for the advice I'll keep the other things in mind but hopefully it is as easy as a u joint

Also, jack it up, put the transfer case in neutral, and the transmission in park. Then spen the wheel like you did before. If you hear the noise then, you have eliminated the transmission as the problem, since nothing in it is turning.

I'l give that a try. Iv been busy with work so it' been put on hold for a moment. I did get the chance to replace the u joints which seems to have made a bit of a difference

The clicking is probably coming from the governor weights, that is normal. Pop a vacuum line off the engine and test drive again, if the squealing is gone you may have an intake or other vacuum leak.
