i'm trying to take my sm465 out of my 1971 jimmy and the transmission hump on the floor board is factory glued on. are there any tricks to removing this or do i have to keep mangling it:D to death.

the reason i'm asking is cuz i feel real bad messing it up if there is a better way of doing it. its a first gen and its just so nice looking with fresh factory paint...thanks in advance

They are a PAIN to get off. But, it is possible to do it without wrecking it!

If I can get a buddy to help, I usually take a small screwdriver, and hammer it through in a spot right near the back of the hump, where it'll be hidden by insulation / carpet in the future. I then take a piano wire, and feed it through, then get my buddy to help me work it back and forth all the way around.

If it is just you, then you'll need to get a drywall spreader thinger (very technical here) that I've sharpened the edges of, and just hammer it up and down the sides, then pry it off.

will the heat gun trick work on an 85 glued on hump or are they also spot welded?
An '85 won't have a removable hump.

Somewhere around '82 or '83, all humps were no longer removable. The floors are all one solid piece.
If you wanted to do a swap such like installing a 465 in place of an automatic, you need to drill or cut out the hole for the shifters.

And no, I have no idea why GM quit the removable humps either.

My 85 Jimmy has a removable tranny hump, it was glued on.
Heat gun & a thin flat chisel removed it with out too much damage.

My 89 has a removeable hump but it is glued in place and not bolted like the earlier blazers.

Once you get the bolts out, a flat 1" drywall knife can be hammered through the seal. It's not really glue, but a sticky rubber seal.

Damn! More than one person has removable humps in the newer trucks. Weird how all the ones I've messed with had solid floors.

Going out to crawl under the '91 K5 and see what it has. I already know my '85 K30 does NOT have a removable hump.

my '85 k30 didnt have a removable hump. but my '88 k5 has a removable one, ive got herculiner over it so its gona be fun trying to get it out. hopefully its just glued and not spot welded as well.

Wes, maybe the K5's had the removeable hump (glued in at least) but trucks didn't?

My 87 Crew Cab doesn't have a removable hump either...so it's looking like the removable hump was a K5 thing.

the removable hump was a k5 thing cuz i junked a 88 burb and it did not have a removable hump but i cut it out to get to the tranie bolts. as for taking the one in thek5 out i have a76k5 i just unbolted it and yanked it off with some help from a flat head screw driver

My '91 K5 has a glued-in hump. First time I ever noticed that.

I've seen quite a few K10's, 20's and 30's with non-removable humps from '82 or '83 and up.

well i have a 86 k5, manual trans truck, and the hump was "glued" and spot welded in. i had a 73, 76, 82, 83 and 2 75's that were all removable (bolts and glue) but my 86 is the first k5 i have owned that i had to drill/ grind spots welds on. i will have to check my 85 parts k5 to see what it has.
