im having trouble getting my sm465 all the way forward. its a 75 trans mechanical 12 inch clutch and a 350 engine. ive got spline engangement because we can take the plugs out of the motor and hand turn everything. its just not going in that last half inch. i believe it to the pilot bushing not lettign the intput shaft go the last little bit, must have damaged it somehow. any ideas or thoughts guys?

If you have a way to release the pressure from the pressure plate while the input shaft is still in the splines (like if you were to push in the clutch) that might help you get things lined up. Those plastic clutch alignment tools suck, they get things close but not perfect.

The snout of the input shaft fits snug in the pilot bushing so being slightly non-centered will give you trouble.

The other thing you can do, but it will take longer, is to put the alignment tool in and loosen the pressure plate enough to move the clutch disk and make sure it is centered evenly between all pressure plate bolts. This will require you to drop the trans but it should go in smoother when you go back with it.

also check to make sure there isn't something getting pinched........

I've dropped my sm465 a couple of times. Getting it in took lots of wiggling, pushing, lifting up and down and lots of sweat and swearing. I wish I could tell you that it was in any way easy but it just isn't. Like m00nBlaZe said, if you are even slightly off center or off angle the transmission wont go all the way forward.
