Transmission in question is a stock 4l80e in my '95 3500. It's a dedicated tow rig and driver. I've only had the truck 2years now and in that time frame the tranny started to go. I'm sure it was on it's way out before I got a hold of it. Anyways the oil is now a nice brown color and smells burnt and it's starting to slip really bad when it's cold. When I first start the rig after it's been sitting going from park to D or R it will hesitate and jump and then go into gear. Once it's running it's fine. But pulling hills The ENTIRE truck just is overtaken by burning smell. I'm no tranny expert but I'm thinking that's not a good thing.:doah::doah:

So my question try and have it rebuilt or just by a new one. I have no idea on cost of a rebuild. I've been looking at Monster Transmissions and their prices seem hard to beat, but are their trannys any good?

Rebuild it yourself.

Just rebuilt my TH400, added a Trans-Go 400 1-2 re-programming kit as well...first time I've ever done more than a filter change on an auto trans. I picked up my rebuild kit and an ATSG manual from ebay. I think I got the re-programming kit from Summit. As far as rebuilding goes....follow the ATSG manual step by step, word for word and it's not a big deal. It says you need special tools to complete some of the stuff, I made a couple c-clamps work for a spring compressor and careful use of a dental pick to install one of the seals, rather than the 'special tool' the book said to use.

Took me 4.5-5 hours. If I had to rebuild another TH400, I could probably do it in under 3 hours.
