One thing I dislike about the 700R4's is the fact the ones with the TV cable are vulnerable--if that cable snaps, falls off at the carb or injector pump,or the adjuster goes out of whack and lets it move, the tranny is toast in a matter of miles..

I have to do something with my '85 Diesel Suburban,it's 700R4 supposedly loses reverse and overdrive after it "warms up",according to the former owner..since I do not drive long distances on the interstates often,I am pondering what one tranny rebuilder suggested--get a 2wd TH350 "short tail" tranny, ditch the tailshaft and buy a spacer to make up the difference in length,so it'll end up the same length overall as a 700R4 is,so it'll be a bolt in swap with no driveshaft mods..but I forgot to ask him about what to do about vacuum for the TH350's modulator,or the 6 bolt lower stall speed torque converter..(I think he assumed I had a gasser, not a diesel!)..
I know cable operated modulators can be had,but are costly and then you have the same frail cable woes as a 700R4..not sure if there is a diesel version torque converter for a TH350??..

I have asked a lot of guys for opinions about what to swap in,so far most say to get a TH400 & the transfer case and driveshafts from a junker, and live with no overdrive--they have modulators too though!..others say to just swap in another 700R4 and a few said the gas versions will work behind a diesel fine, despite having a slightly higher stall speed converter with "only" three bolts, they still bolt up to the diesels 6 olt flex plate..I dont know which way to go,but I dont like the 700R4's fragility, especially if I go with a used one, which is the only option I have, cheaper is better..

I am leaning towards a 700R4. If I go that route I will just have it built. Fixed the rear end issue, and now the truck runs great so I do not need to rush anything. I am just going to wait and do everything at once. Axle swap and transmission swap, I will just have to suck up the price of drivelines. I like the 4l80E but it seems like its going to be a serious pain in the ass to swap one in. I do not want to use an NP205, I want to use my 208. From what I have read I cannot tell if it will work or not. I do not want to deal with having custom adapters made. So the 700R4 is looking like the way to go right now.

TransGo makes a kit to convert a 4L80E to run a vacuum modulator like a TH400 does so it eliminates the need for a stand alone TCM. They're less than 150 bucks if you know where to look. But if you still don't want to go that route, then go with the 700R4.

anyone have any first hand experience with this? there have been some good deals on the 4l80e lately...

from what i've read, this is still a manual shift deal...:dunno:

I haven't had any experience with it but some people on Pirate4x4 have.

I have read that this is not a manual valvebody conversion. It allows the trans to run without a stand alone TCM. It is still fully automatic.

Regarding the 4L80e:
I think the $150 kit is manual shift kit.
For $1200-1500 you can buy the 'compu-shift' that allows stand alone automatic shifting. This same kit is sold by both Transgo and TCM.
Second item from top: http://www.transmissioncenter.org/cummins_4bt_and_6bt_adapter.htm
I really don't think there is currently anything under $1000 to convert the 4L80e to stand alone auto shift, only the manual valve body for $150.
Sadly, I think there is no low cost stand alone auto shift conversion yet.:(
