Transmission problem

Hi all,

my cousins 1989 blazer suddenly had a problem when he turned to 4WD, a big clicking sound started to come when he starts moving the car over 10mph, we dont know if the sound is from the axle or from the transmission gear...


any has any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Check the UJ's on the front prop shaft. When they go bad they make a bad clicking noise. Putting it in 4 wheel will bring them into play.

if that is the problem, then they have been put into play but cant be put back off even when 4wd is set off..

How do you mean? Is it still making the noise in 2 wd ?

deffinetely sounds like a ujiont, or if it has autolocking hubs in the front, it could be those (they are know for having problems when they get some miles on them) it could be a ujiont in the front axle or front driveshaft.

if it doesn't start till you put it in 4wd, then continues after you put it in 2wd, its most likely in the front axle/driveshaft area, especially if it has autolocking hubs. when you put it in 2wd, the hubs don't automaticly unlock for a while. so the front axle and driveshaft is still spinning.

W/ the TC in 2wd, you should back-up about 15-20' to "unlock" the automatic hubs.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that the backing up thing is applicable to that model.

yes, when we put the car back to 2wd the sound is still there...

its a continuse strong click that comes from the back side of the motor.. and we cant drive faster than 10mps as the sound gets really strong..

Are you actually getting 4wd?

Clicking in 4wd in my truck with auto hubs was them not working right.

Driveshaft will of course turn with 4wd engaged, but if the hubs are screwed up (as the auto hubs are many times) the front wheels won't be doing any work. Typically you find out you don't have 4wd when you need it.

You should check all the bolts from the converter to the flex plate/flywheel to see if they are tight. If they are I would then check the flexplate/flywheel itself for any cracks. I have run into both situations in an street rod.
