Transmission Problem

Hi, I bought my Blazer about 2 weeks ago and I love the thing. The guy I bought it off didn't drive it much, and I drive it quite a bit so I think I'm starting to dust off some of the problems it has. For about 4 days the transmission seemed to be rattling when I gave it a little gas. It almost seemed loose, like I'd gas it then a second later it'd start moving. Anyway I was driving and 1st and 2nd gear worked fine then when I went into 3rd the engine would just rev freely, now it does this every time I go into 3rd. Is the transmission totally broken, what should I do? take it to a shop? Thanks.

Have you checked the trans fluid? Is it full?
If it is full and the fluid is brown and burnt it is most likely time for a new trans.

x2 on the fluid. If it smells really bad its time for a rebuild.
