OK folks, the patient is a 2007 1500 with the 5.3 flex-fuel engine. 4 wheel drive.
I do not know which transmission, but its stock.
One of my friends came down to the swamp with this truck. I was packing to head out, so did not get as many details as needed.
He bought it used just recently, and has a warranty which runs out in about a year.
On top of my lack of information, I did not get a chance to drive it, or do any kind of diagnostics on it.
I will be headed back down sometime next week, and if he is still there, I will get more info. But here is what I have now.
He says when driving normally, there is a groan when the transmission upshifts from 2 to 3. Under load, it does not do it. Just when driving easily.
He took it back to the dealer. Not sure what order they did this in, but they said it was the saddle bearing and replaced that.
Then, they said it was a U-joint and replaced that.
Drove it with the reader hooked up, and said it was the transmission, and had to be fixed right away.
I saw the worksheet on that.
There was a gear of some kind, plus a sprag along with a pan gasket, and, I think, 16 quarts of atf.
There were several other parts, but those stuck with me.
When he went to get it, they told him that the radiator had to be replaced because of trash in it that caused the problem in the first place.
Remember, I am getting all this second hand. I did see the worksheet though.
After all that, they told him it was not in the transmission, but in the rear end.
But it was OK to drive it until next week when he should bring it in and they would fix it.
So far, there has been no charge for any of this work, but the truck still groans during the 2-3 shift. He did say that it seemed to be louder when it shifted turning a corner, which would tend to lend credence to the rear end theory.
However, I do not ever remember a rear end making a noise only during one shift.
1 to 2 seems to be OK.
Any and all ideas welcome.
I wish I had more information, but I had to meet someone, and I either have some kind of pneumonia, pleurisy, a pulled muscle or maybe lung cancer and its giving me a fit when I try to take a deep breath.
Plus I am just generally weak for some reason.
So, it was all I could do to get packed and head out.
I'm going to lay around some tomorrow, and head to work on Monday if I can get out of bed.
This will be the first year in almost 40 that I do not spend new year's in the swamp.
I told my friend that I was going to post his problem to the biggest collection of Mechanics, tinkerers, geniuses, dumb*sses and general all around great guys I had ever run into.
Told him if these guys cannot come up with any suggestions, you might as well dump it.
