So I am in the process of building my k5 and I have run into a question. The rig has a TH400 in it that truly has nothing wrong with it, and has 4.88 gears. This is not only going to be my everyday driver but will get plenty of attention offroad as well. SO my big brain decided to order a built 700r4 to get a overdrive tranny and help a bit on my day to day driving. I have to wait on advance adapters to send a shaft to my tranny guy so now with time to think of my money and what it could go to elsewhere on the truck I'm getting cold feet on the transmission. Would just like to here pros and cons, and is it really that bad of a decision.

I have a built 700r4 in my truck and like it. Hindsight I wish I would've gone with a late model Trans and stand alone controler. I dropped it off at a buddy's a shop and asked him to figure out why my PO installed brand new 700 wasn't shifting right. He snatched it out and put a built one in that he was gonna use on one of his projects . I run 373 gears with 33s and get between 15-16 mpg on the highway.

I had an local old guy with 30 years transmission rebuilding experience rebuild my 700r4 to meet the demands of beating on it offroad. If this didnt work, I was going to go TH400 and call it a day and deal with not having an overdrive. Its been nearly 5 years now and its still holding up. I DD my K5 50% of the time and having the OD is nice to have. I would do this route again for a DD/weekend wheeler.
