Are 2wd and 4wd trannnies different? what is the strongest tranny gm built? also do certain trannies bolt up to certain transfer cases?

Output shafts different.
Best manual in NV4500 4wd version wil bolt to the 3/4 ton 208 case used in 80's
Best auto TH400 has beef and there is a later elec version with OD.

Worst was early 82-86 700R4

Before the NV4500 came along the SM465 was the king of beef for manuals. I think they are about equal in strength, but the SM465 doesn't have an overdrive, BUT its a lot cheaper to buy one.
