Hey all, first off, where did the search bar go? i looked for it, and couldnt find it. im feelin a little retarded at this point....... i thought it used to be next to the display of your user name up in the top right corner.
Anyway, refresher, i got a 1986 M1009 diesel blazer. the TH400 has started to act up on me. nothing major, but enough that ive started to look at what my options are. Im well aware that rebuilding a TH400 is gonna be expensive, and im pricing out replacment trannies, and looking at the attractive possibility of putting an overdrive tranny in its place. So far, ive been looking at three options.
4L60
with or without computer (prefer without)
360ft/lbs torque handling
3.059 1st gear, 1.625 2nd, 1.00 3rd, .0696 4th, 2.29 R.
4L65
basically the same, just a higher 380ft/lbs torque handling.
4L80
only with computer i think
440ft/lbs torque handling
2.48 1st, 1.48 2nd, 1.00 3rd, .75 4th, 2.08 R.
4L85
same as above, with a 480ft/lbs torque handling.
or keep the TH400 and rebuild it.
Im just looking for opinions, or even better feedback from people who have done these swaps.
I really like the gear ratios on the smaller 4L60 and 4L65 trannies, and even with a turbo, im probly only looking at around 195hp and 360ft/lbs of torque from the old 6.2L so i shouldnt be pushing the tranny to hard. But i really like the idea of a TH400 based design thats a helluva lot stronger. I just dont know if those higher gear ratios are worth the warm fuzzy feeling.
im open to all thoughts and opinions. The truck mostly see's highway duty, with whatever off roading, mudding, and some rocks i can work into the mix. Nothing crazy.
