I looked around and did not find this question or any information in general.

With my 700r4 out of the Blazer, will the bell housing holes (where the tranny to engine bolts go) support the weight of the transmission if hung from a traditional engine stand??

I'd rather not have to pay the $105 for the stand that allows access to the torque converter and attaches to the SIDES of the transmission.....would rather use my existing stand.

My fear would be one or more of the aluminum holes would break off. Thought I'd ask first to see if anyone has any experience. I found one photo online of someone that did it but there was no included information. I am doing this only to support it as I clean it up and change the pan.

Also, what are the pros/cons of keeping the torque converter on the pump shaft. I understand it is full of fluid but I would like to drain it and put it aside while waiting for the reinstallation. Also, should I refill the torque converter before replacing it on the pump shaft. Thanks for any help.

i have done it with a th400 4x4 case / c4 ford :censored: / 700r4 2wd / sm465 4x4 no t-case .

those others are more for the guy doing rebuilds so you can stand up the case and get the guts out and other work .

I just bolt it to the engine stand if you have one open. I like to put a Jack stand under the tail shaft to support the end, similar to how it’s installed

If the converter isn’t coming out, I usually put a bungee across it to keep the pump drives engaged to the converter. You don’t wanna have that thing moving back and forth too much, you can break the pump

OK, was worried it would break the case with the weight. Wanted to hear someone else did this successfully before I tried....go boldly where others have gone first!

I will do what I've seen done in trannys I've had delivered. Take a piece of 1" flat steel with two holes and bolt it to one of the case Mount holes and to one of the converter bolt holes. Keeps it from spinning or sliding off.

A guy out here in AZ has a metal barstool type seat with a hole cut out in the middle to stand the tranny up on.. just an idea.

Take the converter and place it upside down on a 5 gallon bucket till you need it again it will be nice and drained out. Don’t need to fill it with oil when you reinstall it. But I would recommend a new seal for sure!

Good plan. Gusssing it just slides off like the Ford transmissions?

Why wouldn’t you refill the torque convertor after draining it before you reinstall on the trans?

One reason is, the converter will not be fully drained sitting on top of a bucket like that. You'll get half of it out, but not all of it. Plus the pump will fill it back up as soon as it's running.

Makes sense. So a dry torque convertor you would add 1qt but one that was filled and running, if you remove and drain it, just reinstall it because it’s not really dry?

You can only add as much as it could take before it pukes out the center when you set it up vertically to put it back on the transmission. So it could take a quart or two. But be prepared for it to spill out as you got to install it.

Forgot to thank everyone for the help. My HF stand is holding the 700r4 like a champ!

Taking the time to Degrease and remove the old paint. The saran wrap is to keep the paint remover wet. Not the most entertaining work I've done but needed to be done.
