What to do...

My daily driven 2000 Silverado's tranny started slipping in overdrive only... My buddy at the dealership told me to start saving my pennies becuase it's only a matter of time before it goes.

He can rebuild it on the side for $1,100 parts and labor minus converter with all GM parts.

I can order a TCI rebuild kit and converter and have him rebuild it...

What would you all do? All GM parts or TCI?

By the way... the converter alone for this truck is about $600!

Unless your in need of some higher stall converter, go with a reman. They're much cheaper 150-200 from our reman company and even their race car sh*t is still less than 500. The TCI build kit may not be a bad idea, assuming its got the right parts in the kit and the price is right.
A have yet to use a Gm kit , transtar is who we use, and you can always option up for better clutches and bands. When its all said and done id definetly put a good shift kit in to eleviate more of the common issues
And installing a beast drive shell is a must.

Thanks for the info! What is the drive shell? I talked to one of the best tranny guys in town yesterday and he gave me all kinds of things to look at first since the problem only appears to be in OD. I was told to put a scanner on it and look at the pressure switch manifold and the changes in signal between gears; mainly 3rd and 4th.

Do you think I even need a converter since the truck only has 110K on the clock?

Thanks again for the help!

good lord, a 2000 with "only" 110k on the clock :D

you have a ten year old vehicle with 110k miles. thats not an "only" situation my friend :wink1:

but at this point what you do need is a proper diagnostic if it hasnt been done. but im with your friend that if youre starting to have issues, with the age and mileage on it, a proper rebuild would be strongly advised. aftermarket upgrades are normally my choice. stronger clutch packs, better friction materials. stronger parts. The torque converter, if its not malfunctioning, dont worry about it. the scanner can measure the level of slippage of the converter and let you know if its ok.

proper diagnostics save money.

Absolutely 100% a rebuild is not a rebuild without a converter, i guess im still assuming you are talking about a 4L60e. The converter has a carbon weave clutch in it, not that the clutch gets screwed up all that ofter, but they still have their issues, and for the 110$ for a quality reman it is a must.

Thanks for all the replies guys. My buddy said he can do the tranny for $1,400 to $1,500 bucks and I know the guy isn't just good but damn good. If I can get a quality reman converter for $110 I'll definately replace it. The truck is in great shape and I plan on keeping it so I need to do this right.

I keep getting told to use the higher end Raybestos parts... opinions on those as compared to say the TCI kit?

K how long has it been slipping in OD?

Theres alot of sensor caused errors in computer controlled trans that can be fixed if you get to them before burning up the clutches that its causing to slip.

If I were you I'd be driving it in non OD drive until you find out its definitely not caused by a sensor.

If your buddy is as good as you say, let him select the components he wants to use in the build. The OE frictions for the 3-4 clutch pack and OE band are both Borg Warner "high energy" and are excellent components. Raybestos offers a "Z-Pack" that has additional friction surface and is a good upgrade for this pack or simply add an additional friction and steel to the pack by means of a thinner pressure plate top and bottom. A small TransGo shift kit will be an improvement as will a rebore and replacement of the TCC control valve assembly( I like Sonnax parts on this one). The Beast reaction shell is a good idea too as well as a 29 element input sprag with dual cage design. All of these components are available from any good trans parts supplier and for less than you might pay for a TCI kit. While you are in there be sure and replace the pwm solenoid, 3-2 downshift solenoid and any other electronics you can afford to replace. A reman GM valve body used to come loaded with new electronics and TCC upgrade but I haven't seen one in years, that may be an affordable option for you. As others have said, definitely replace the converter with a good quality reman.

Hmmmmm.... this may add to the story a little. The truck is lifted with 35's and I've run the factory 3:73's ever since. I just started running the truck in OD again since the install of the 4:56's...

Sticking solenoid maybe from lack of use all this time since I've drivin it in D with the 3:73's and 35's for so long?
