Does anyone else here have a trans temp guage installed? If so where do you install the temp sensor. what should temp be under normal conditions and what temop should you start to worry about overheating? Im running a 700r4 in a 91 jimmy with 37's and 5.13 gears and am going to be towing 6000lb trailer over the sierras soon.

Temp guage should be in the pan. putting it in the lines or the pressure tap does no good. You need to know what the majority of the fluids temp is at. Having a sender in the cooling lines may tell you the temp is OK but the fluid in the pan may be sitting there cooking. Temp should be around 160 Average. Its Ok to go higher 200+ for a short time under high load towing, Long hard hill climb. Just as long as it cools down on the down hill.
I tow quite a bit haul my boat all over the Sierras/Cascades and Costal ranges of the pacific NW Salmon/ ocean fishing.
I change change trans fluid every year before summer towing season and check it often If my fluid looks anything other than brand new pussy pink it is outta there. I have 130K+ miles on my stock orginal 700, many of it hard towing in the summer and it is still going strong.
To keep a 700 alive when you tow a lot you have to have a good clean heavy duty radiator and a 22000 GVR+ aftermarket cooler + frequent fluid changes.

when i had a 700r4 i had an automter sending unit thread right into the pressure port of my tranny, worked good for me, told me the temperature of the fluid flowing through it. i second the get a huge cooler idea, i burned up a few 700's.

Where is the preasure port located? I just bought an autometer guage and sending unit.I have a tranny cooler, but not sure what size it is. Its been on there since i first owned my jimmy 7 years ago. The trtanny i have now only haas about 40,000 onit. The first went out on me at 125,000.

I don't know if this would work seeing as how you already have Autometer, but the B&M sender fits their tranny drain plug kit.
