I have a th400 that needs a rebuild. Should I or buy a built one for my truggy project? I am undecided. I do have the skills to tackle a rebuild, I think?lol!

They are not terribly hard to do. Make sure you get a good kit ideally to want to get the existing parts tanked or some how super clean

I have read they are not that difficult. I am also looking at it as a cost perspective. Is it really much cheaper to build. To build it would be an interesting experience. I don't know. Decisions decisions!

It is not a terribly difficult trans to build but replacing bushings without the correct tools can be tough and they will usually all need to be replaced. Be mindful of sprag wear and types of sprag for the power level you are building to. Check planetary pinions for excessive end play or wobble, the attrition rate is about 50 percent. Replace the pump gears, they come in four thicknesses so you will need to mike them out. Be mindful of clutch pack clearances, gear train end play and overall transmission end play. Replace all caged needle bearings. Above all, clean, clean clean!
