Transmission, transfer case Do I have a problem

I have a 1985 GMC K2500 4x4 Suburban I bought it a while back and have been working on it a lil bit at a time, after putting a new motor in,, I now have it at home and I have been getting the truck up running and road worthy, I have been going through all of the systems on the truck to see what I bought and what I need to fix
It has a TH400 Transmission and a 208 Transfer case.
.
I was changing all of the Oils on the truck.
I got to the transfer case and opened the TOP fill hole, and oil came pouring out. I quickly put the cap back on. It was a gusher,,

I took the transmission pan off, to change the oil and the filter. It was clean,,, very clean, but I changed the filter and seal and refilled the transmission, it took 6 QT’s and I checked it running warm and took my time and got it right,, on the full marks,,

Might the oil from the transmission be coming out of the transfer?????? The transfer was way over full and unless the transfer has a fill hole higher than the one I opened ,, whoever filled it last time, did not fill it through that hole,,

If the seal between the transfer case and transmission, ??????? does it need one?? Does it have one??
The oil flows between them,,

Maybe they tipped it up on one end, and filled it,, ,, HAHa joking,,

The truck runs and drives great.

Do I have a problem,

should be a input seal on the tcase.

the 208 would be atf .

lots of times fluid can push past in to tcase from tranny .

i would drain / fill the tcase and then run it a little and recheck the level . if its over full again then there might be a problem with the seal .

What he said, sounds like classic input seal failure

I think you guys are right,,

Ok,, I'm running Dexron III just topped it off,,,

so its in both, systems,,,

is it a oh SH@#T I need to fix it,,, right now,, or can I get away with it for a lil bit,,,,

seeing I just topped it off with $8 a QT Dexron,,

basic old dex/merc at $8 bucks each ? dam man who got you ?

It is the Synthetic that's why its $8

any Video of how to change this seal,,,

I like vid,s for things I have not done before,,, ( I know I hear your jokes now) HAHHAAH:pimp:

You have to pull the transfer case and maybe the adaptor depending on what adaptor you have. The new seal will either press in the adaptor, or in the front of the transfer case. You also may need an adaptor gasket or o-ring depending on what type that is as well. At least you don't need to pull the trans.

Yes I think you are right,, I have not done one before, but I have done, lots of other things in the past,, this is just one more,, new thing.

I have not found any Youtube vids on the 208, for that seal, But I'll just have to get it on the ground, and change the seals, as needed,,

Oh well, all in all the truck,, is in good shape it just needs some Love,, and time it should last me a good long time,, after I get all of the this and that's fixed,,

Thank you for your in-put,, !

There are six nuts that hold the transfer case to the trans adapter, take those out and the transfer case slides right off. You will need to replace the gasket. The seal will be right there in front sealing the transfer case input gear. Simply remove and replace, get a new adapter to transfer case gasket and put it back together again. Quite simple for sure. If you need a seal and gasket and cant find one let me know.:thumb:

I got the Job done,, it was not too bad,, took me longer Because, I just can NOT,,, NOTclean up and paint the parts I work on, the drive shafts and all Look good! got the U joints all greased up with Synthetic grease too,

Kind of funny, re-installing the Transfer, I had it on the trans jack, and as you know it has no good way to put it on a jack, but I got it close, and was wiggling trying to get it in position,,, and !!!!!! it falls off the jack,, I caught it, and it is kind of in my hands,, on my face,,, !!! What to do???,, I bench press it up,, to get it on the trans, shaft,,,,
and the most shocking thing happen,,,,,,

It went right on,,,,,,,, first try,,, Boom howdy!

I should have bought a lotto ticket!

got it all back together,, its good to go!!

Well done!:waytogo:
Thanks,,

you know just looking at the input seal,, it did not look too bad,
its when you compare it to the new one ,, you see how, it had flattened out,,

would have been a 2 hour job,,, but,,,

On to new things with the Burb,,, Made a trade,, for the TPI I took of of it for a Shop to fix the electric windows, and re-do seams,,

then its,,, to building Bumpers,,

:woot:
