What should I use to seal the transmission tunnel cover? Seam Sealer will do it but that stuff seals so hard it takes a hammer and sharp putty knife to cut it loose if you need to get back in there....:dunno:

1/2" wide/1/4" thick foam stick on weatherstrip.

How often do you imagine you'll need to remove that cover Chief? I say seam seal it...

For Dave it makes perfect sense to use foam strips. :flipoff7:

Once I am sure I don't need to look back down on top of it again....probably a long, long time....I need to double check that everything is tightened and in order before I lock it down...I just remember what a PIA it was to get that thing off...but, as you said...I may never need to get in there again...

You have to watch where you use some RTV's,they might rust up the metal badly...I once used some to seal around the windsheild on my old truck and the next year you could put your hand thru the rust hole it made...the acetic acid in it can rust steel quickly................................................................................................I have used "Gutter-Seal" butyl rubber caulking in tubes made for gutters and metal building seams with good results,I like that stuff better than 3M seam sealer because it wont let water get under it and rot the floor like the OEM stuff often does--plus its much cheaper at home centers than 3M seam sealer is............................................................................................................................................................................................................in the past on low budget floor restorations using tin and pop rivets,I have used trowel grade roof cement to seal up the seams ,but that stuff is pretty hard to get off if you ever had to take the patch back off ,its a pretty good adhesive as well as sealant...it also burns like napalm if any welding needs to be done near it too, which made future repairs a pain..but its cheap, works good, and is readily available...

Is that stuff going to be a mess when you have to remove the tunnel next time, or can you just scrape it out? I think I know what it is, and how it would be when you remove the tunnel, but just asking.

Is there any sort of foam seal that will hold up?

It works. Its bot like sticky but when you tighten down it seals up really nicely. Used on all the sky lights and anything needing sealed on top of campers and rv's. Scrapes right off but could really be reused. I did some caper roofs for my cousin this summer and the stuff works great. Idk how to explain it. Almost like house temp laffy taffy? :dunno:

That doesn't sound bad. I was just worried that either it sticks to the parts so good when you disassemble it ends up a stringy mess, or bending the edge of the flange because it won't let go.

I got my hands on some butyl to make the little drain channels on the K5 bed rails, and ended up putting baby powder or something on the one side of it so it wouldn't stick to the seal.
